W. Md. gets past Lebanon Valley


Western Maryland (4-3-1) scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes to escape Lebanon Valley (2-6) with a 27-13 victory yesterday.

Record-setting senior quarterback Brian Van Deusen and freshman wide receiver Corry Rutters connected on a 46-yard pass play with 2:56 remaining to break a 13-13 tie. Van Deusen then cemented the win with a 2-yard run with 27 seconds remaining.

Bethany 24, Salisbury St. 21

Daron Wimbish was stopped one yard short of the goal line with 1:04 remaining, and as a result, the winning streak of Salisbury State (5-2) was stopped at five.

Joe Caruso's 25-yard field goal had given host Bethany (7-1) a three-point lead with 3:38 remaining. David Doy, who passed for 266 yards, led Salisbury on a 70-yard drive. On fourth-and-10, he hit Wimbish at the 1-yard line, but the tailback, who had scored two touchdowns, was unable to score.

Frostburg St. 21, Ferrum 6

The Bobcats (5-3) intercepted Ferrum (6-3) quarterback Millard Vining three times and their offense racked up 326 yards rushing in an easy home win.
