Giants-Redskins tonight

Site: RFK Stadium, Washington.

Time: 8

TV/Radio: TNT, Channel 20/WLIF (101.9 FM).

Records: Redskins 3-5; Giants 2-5.

Line: Redskins by 3.

Last week: The Redskins beat the Detroit Lions in overtime, 36-30; the Giants had a bye.

The series: The Redskins hold a 71-50-3 regular-season edge and the teams are 1-1 in playoff games. The Giants have won 16 of the past 21 nonstrike games in this series, including the NFC championship game after the 1986 season. They also have won the past four.

On the sidelines: Norv Turner is 6-18 in his second season with the Redskins. Dan Reeves is 23-18 in his third season with the Giants and 140-97-1 overall, including his 12 years with the Broncos.

What the Redskins have to do to win: The Redskins figure to use the same game plan that worked against Detroit, jam the line to stop Rodney Hampton and force Dave Brown to beat them with a passing game that is ranked 27th.

What the Giants have to do to win: Stop running back Terry Allen with a rush defense that is ranked 27th (Redskins are 28th). The Redskins are 3-0 when he rushes for 100 yards and 0-5 when he doesn't.

Outlook: Bill Parcells used to call this rivalry "the best the NFL has to offer." It's no longer that, but it still figures to be competitive because both teams are struggling.

Stellino's pick: Redskins 24, Giants 23 -- The Redskins are starting to resemble an NBA team. All their games are decided in the last two minutes.
