When is a can of paint not a can of paint? When it's a lifestyle choice. Ralph Lauren has launched his designer paint collection in a licensing agreement with Sherwin-Williams. The interior latex paint, in select stores by December, will be available in five "lifestyle groups": Safari, Country, Sport, Santa Fe and Thoroughbred. Cost will be around $21 a gallon.
We all love the story of the lucky person who discovers some valuable collectible at a flea market, and wish it could be us. Of course, first you have to know that Barbie No. 1, blonde, boxed and in mint condition, is worth $4,500. For that you need Small Fortune, a newsletter published in Annapolis that focuses on recognizing and valuing antiques and collectibles. It includes articles on items ranging from buttons to Depression glass, a question and answer column, a "Trips & Trends" feature and book reviews.
A subscription is $39 a year for 10 issues. Write to Small Fortune, Box 3341, Annapolis, Md. 21403, or call (301) 261-2712 for more information.
Something Else for Halloween
Getting a little bored with the usual Halloween decorations? Check out Something Else at 1611 Sulgrave Ave. in Mount Washington.
Each year owner Elsie Fergusson, who travels regularly to Mexico, does a window for the Day of the Dead, Nov. 2, instead of Halloween. (This is one of Mexico's most important festivals, when people clean and decorate graves, feast and make music.) Charming and authentic gifts and decorative accessories related the holiday are for sale, including boxes, candles, pictures of saints in tin frames, tin ornaments and the traditional skeleton figures in various guises.
