On the field: When benches and bullpens cleared during the first-inning confrontation between Cleveland designated hitter Eddie Murray and Braves pitcher Greg Maddux, Atlanta left fielder Luis Polonia was standing at the mound when he suddenly felt something thump off the back of his head. Polonia turned around, stunned, probably looking for somebody to hit. But it was Indians reliever Julian Tavarez, who jokingly had picked up the bag of rosin and knocked it lightly against Polonia's head. Tavarez put Polonia in a headlock, and the two men laughed as the fight broke up.
In the dugout: Although Javy Lopez has had an excellent series hitting for Atlanta, Charlie O'Brien started at catcher. O'Brien usually catches Maddux, and manager Bobby Cox said he prefers to keep Maddux as comfortable as possible.
In the clubhouse: "Next question." -- Cox, after somebody asked the Braves manager if he'd rather wait until Game 6 to wrap up the World Series.
