Clippers top Western, 3-2, clinch tie for City-Wide title

Kati Bonnell and Christina Reinhardt, who sparked Patterson throughout the season, did it again yesterday as the host Clippers clinched at least a tie for the City-Wide Championship with a 3-2 victory over Western.

The game, which also served as a Class 3A-4A North Region opening-round playoff, put Patterson (7-2, 7-1) in the driver's seat for the City-Wide championship.

Today's Western-City game decides it. A Western victory lets the Doves (6-1, 6-1) share the title with Patterson, while a loss gives the championship to the Clippers outright. Western's season ends today regardless, but Patterson will face No. 5 C.M. Wright on Tuesday or Wednesday in the next round of the regional playoffs.

Yesterday's game was all about converting scoring chances. Both teams had plenty of opportunities, but Patterson -- which lost to Western, 5-4, earlier -- took advantage more than Western did.

Bonnell (two goals) and Reinhardt (one goal, one assist) set up most of the scoring chances. Bonnell scored twice in the first half as Patterson took a 2-0 lead, and Reinhardt got the game-winner in the 27th minute of the second half after Western tied it.

"This was our game," said Reinhardt. "We wanted this more than anything in the world."

Bonnell (22 goals, 11 assists) scored the first goal from a severe angle on the right side in the 19th minute of the game. Nine minutes later, Reinhardt (12 goals, six assists) made a perfect lead pass to Bonnell in the box, and the freshman scored for a 2-0 lead.

But Western rallied after halftime. Dietra Moore (10 goals, six assists) made it 2-1 when she chipped in a short shot in the 11th minute of the second half. Moore helped tie it moments later in the 12th minute when she made a perfect cross that Kerri Harman (19 goals, 11 assists) back-headed in.

Reinhardt got the game-winner 15 minutes later. She sent a long shot toward the goal from about 20 yards out on the right side. Western goalie Monique Budd couldn't handle it, and the ball rolled into the net.
