Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. has named the first female vice president in its nearly 180-year history.
As BGE's vice president of marketing and sales, Sharon S. Hostetter's work will be expanded beyond her responsibilities of the past six months, as manager of marketing in the utility's Marketing and Sales division.
"I'm both honored and excited, although I realize that other women or minorities could have easily stepped into a vice presidential role," said Ms. Hostetter, who joined BGE in May after 11 years at the Rochester Gas & Electric Co., where she was a division manager for marketing with the New York power concern.
"My skill set is in marketing and sales, and that's just what happened to open up. But I think it's also a statement about my leadership style, not whether I'm a woman or a minority."
BGE's Marketing and Sales division oversees the company's efforts at energy conservation, economic development, the Brighten Baltimore campaign to illuminate downtown skyscrapers and other residential and commercial sales programs.
Ms. Hostetter's promotion to head the division, approved by BGE's board on Friday, followed the appointment of Stephen F. Wood as president and chief executive of a new BGE subsidiary devoted to providing energy services to large commercial and industrial clients.
Ms. Hostetter, 50, becomes one of 10 vice presidents at BGE, which has 8,100 employees.
In her new role, she will report to Edward A. Crooke, BGE's president and chief operating officer.
As head of the division, overseeing a staff of roughly 200, she plans to improve communication with customers and establish an accounting method to determine whether the service-oriented division is profitable for BGE.
"We have customer segments that we don't communicate with at all, except to send them a bill," Ms. Hostetter said. "So we need to communicate better."
