A Silver Spring man apparently fell asleep while driving on U.S. 29 in Scaggsville, struck a guardrail and crashed into his windshield Thursday night, Howard County rescue officials said.

Patrick Bassett, 25, was in fair condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore yesterday, a hospital spokeswoman said. He was treated for injuries to his head and spleen, rescue officials said.

According to rescue reports, Mr. Bassett was driving north on U.S. 29 near Hillcrest Drive about 10:40 p.m. when his car swerved across the highway median and hit a guardrail near the lanes for southbound traffic. The force of the collision propelled Mr. Bassett, who was not wearing a seat belt, into the windshield. Police are investigating the incident.
