ATLANTA — ATLANTA -- First baseman Don Mattingly, who is eligible to become a free agent after the World Series, will remain with the New York Yankees, an executive of another club said he was told yesterday.
Other unconfirmed reports say Buck Showalter has agreed to continue managing the Yankees under a three-year contract but that all or some of his coaches have been fired. One executive said that only Willie Randolph, the third base coach, and Nardi Contreras, the pitching coach, have been retained.
