Zachetti, Holland share Baltimore Invitational lead Former Amateur champs shoot 73s on wet course

Vince Zachetti and Richard Holland, a pair of former Middle Atlantic Amateur champions, shot 3-over-par 73s and shared the first-round lead in the Baltimore Country Club Invitational tournament over the East Course at Five Farms yesterday.

Scores, for the most part, were higher than might have been expected, but considering the course took three inches of rain before ending in late morning, it was a wonder there was any play.

The leaders in the select 22-man field were followed by John Baldwin, Larry Storck, Jerry Courville Jr. and Pat Tallent at 74.

Zachetti, a top 10 finisher the last time the Middle Atlantic Amateur was held over the same course, saw the key to his round as having no three-putt greens.

He birdied the uphill par-3 ninth with a 2-iron shot and a 17-foot putt, and the 15th, where he hit a 2-wood second shot to the edge of the green and made a 15-foot putt.

The fact three of his five bogeys were made after driving the ball in the center of the fairways, however, had the suburban Pittsburgh resident shaking his head.

Holland, playing in the final twosome, used three birdies to take the lead on the back nine, before a last-hole bogey dropped him back to a tie with Zachetti. His 35 was the low back-nine score of the day.

The Washington resident, who said he had not played the course in a long time, birdied the 10th, 14th, and 16th holes, the last with a 40-foot putt he was just trying to get close.

At No. 18, he was short of the par-4 hole in two, chipped badly and had to make a comeback putt from five feet to save par.

This is the renewal of a one-time prestigious event that was started in 1911, and, despite interruptions by two world wars, was held through 1946 before going off the club calendar. The final round will be played this morning.
