Lions vs. Redskins

Site: RFK Stadium, Washington

Time: 1 p.m

TV/Radio: Ch. 5/WLIF (101.9 FM)

Line: Lions by 1 1/2 .

Last week: The Redskins lost to the Arizona Cardinals, 24-20, and the Lions lost to the Green Bay Packers, 30-21.

The series: The Redskins hold a 22-8 regular-season edge and have won the two playoff meetings. The Redskins have won 16 straight -- including the playoff games -- in the series and are 17-0 against the Lions in Washington.

On the sidelines: Norv Turner is 5-18 in his second season with the Redskins, including a 2-9 home mark. Lions coach Wayne Fontes is 54-57 in his seventh year.

What the Redskins have to do to win: Stop Barry Sanders. The Redskins are 28th against the run and Sanders gained 151 yards the last time he faced a Ron Lynn defense, in 1992, when the Redskins' defensive coordinator was in Cincinnati.

What the Lions have to do to win: If the Redskins jam the line of scrimmage to stop Sanders, quarterback Scott Mitchell figures to go to wide receivers Herman Moore and Brett Perriman, who appear to have the edge on Darrell Green and Tom Carter.

Outlook: If the Lions are ever going to win a game in Washington, this should be the year. Detroit appears to have too many offensive weapons for a beleaguered Redskins defense.

Stellino's pick: Lions 21, Redskins 17 -- The Redskins are hoping for a monsoon to slow down Sanders and the Lions.
