The volunteers: George and Pauline Bottiger, married 61 years, have been volunteers for Meals on Wheels since 1982, occasionally making two or three trips a week to pick up and deliver dinners to the homebound.
The Bottigers drive from St. John's Lutheran Church in Ferndale to pick up hot and cold meals in Baltimore, then deliver them to residents in Curtis Bay and Brooklyn Park.
In addition to delivering meals, the Bottigers are also route chairpersons, in charge of scheduling volunteers and making certain someone is always available to make deliveries.
They have lived in Ferndale since 1958 and are longtime members of St John's Lutheran Church. Mrs. Bottiger is retired from Maryland Casualty Co.; Mr. Bottiger is retired from Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. He also spent 17 years with the Alarmers Association, serving food and refreshments to fire and police during emergencies.
Pauline Bottiger: "All in all, it just makes you feel wonderful to do these things.
"We believe that we wouldn't be able to do it if wasn't for the Lord. Our motto is, 'We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.'
"We've been doing it so long that you learn to treat these people like a part of your family, and they're glad to see us coming.
"We can't spend too much time with them because you have to get the meals out. But if they have some sort of problem, we won't leave until we hear it. Several don't have any family.
"We can always use some more volunteers."
