Wright runners sweep titles at Harford championships

C. Milton Wright juniors Mary Beth Rollins and Eric Benjamin registered convincing wins in leading their teams to victory in the annual Harford County championships at Harford Glen in Bel Air yesterday.

Each bolted to the lead early in the 2.9-mile races and were not threatened. Rollins was timed in 18 minutes, 55 seconds, and Benjamin, 16:09.

Rollins' teammate Kelly Coogan, third last year as a freshman, was second in 19:30, followed by North Harford's Megan McNew, 19:40. Benjamin was trailed by teammate Dave Warnick, 16:23, and Tim Kuck of Bel Air, 16:37.

Wright, with senior Jen Englehart, the 1993 champion, getting fourth, and the five scorers among the first 11 finishers, totaled 28 points. Fallston was second, 55.

The Wright boys, who gained revenge after losing last year's county title and this year's dual meet to Fallston, put their scorers in the top 10 in collecting 27 points. Fallston, with three in the first 10, was second (53) and Bel Air, third (70).

"I just felt good, so I went out and ran. I had no idea how far ahead I was," said Rollins, who missed last season because of illness, but has been making up for lost time as Wright's No. 1 runner.

Benjamin, unbeaten against county foes this year, but a disappointing -- to him -- 10th in last week's Harford Invitational at C. Milton Wright, said he felt more confident this time.

"I got out well, and just ran to win. Dave pushed me, and we had a good race," he said.
