Robber surprises manager opening restaurant for day

An armed man hiding inside a Columbia restaurant surprised a manager opening for business yesterday morning and stole cash from a safe before fleeing, Howard County police said.

The manager was not injured. Detectives were trying to learn how the robber got into the Bob Evans in the 8300 block of Benson Drive in Columbia's Long Reach village and how long he waited there.

It was about 5 a.m., police said, when the manager entered and was confronted by a man with a handgun. The manager was forced to open the restaurant's safe, and the robber took the cash and ran, police aid.

The robber was described as a slim, 6-foot-1 black man with short hair and a mustache. He wore a tan jacket, blue jeans, gloves and a black backpack, police said.
