Burglary suspect arrested

County police have arrested a Severna Park man in a series of thefts in the Point Field Landing Community of Millersville.

Police found the man on Benfield Road Tuesday night after a neighborhood resident called to say a thief was in his garage rummaging through his car, police said.

Jim Sachs of the 400 block of Old Orchard Road told police he chased the man from his garage about 10 p.m. Tuesday and saw the man run down Old Orchard Road.

Police broadcast a description of the suspect and began searching.

As officers combed the neighborhood, Clayton S. McCarl, who lives nearby, flagged them down and told them he had seen a man drop a laptop computer and a briefcase between houses as he ran through the neighborhood, police said.

A few minutes later, another officer found a man fitting the suspect's description on Benfield Road between Governstone Parkway and Veterans Highway, police said. Mr. Sachs and Mr. McCarl identified the suspect as the man they had seen.

Police arrested James Alan Hatton, 30, of the 100 block of Clarence Ave. in Severna Park and charged him with nine counts of theft. He was being held on $100,000 bail in the county Detention Center.

The next morning, Mr. McCarl phoned police just before 10:30 a.m. to report finding cellular phones, power tools, cassette tapes and a camera inside a gym bag between houses in his neighborhood. Police said several of the neighbors were not aware that they had been robbed.
