Police say death of Harford man was homicide

The state medical examiner has determined that an unidentified Harford County man found dead in his apartment Wednesday afternoon was killed 10 to 14 days ago after being beaten in the head and neck, a spokesman for the Harford sheriff's office said yesterday.

"Our detectives are treating this death as a homicide," said spokesman Sgt. James Harkens.

The body was found about 3 p.m. Wednesday after the man's landlord called sheriff's deputies to report a foul odor coming from the victim's apartment in the 3900 block of Conowingo Road.

Capt. James Stonesifer of the sheriff's criminal investigation division said the man's name will be withheld until fingerprints can be matched with military records to positively determine his identity.

The homicide is the second in Harford this year. The body of Glenn Lamont Jones, 25, was found in a cornfield near Aberdeen in January. The Havre de Grace man had been shot and his case remains unsolved.

Harford County had six homicides in 1994, according to the state's Uniform Crime Report.
