Spirit signs former Howard star Simmons

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The Spirit put the final piece of the puzzle in place for its season opener by signing former Howard University star Ronald Simmons.

Simmons, 31, a defender, has been in training camp for several weeks and scored 11 points, including three three-point goals in five minutes, in the Spirit's 30-13 exhibition win over the Harrisburg Heat on Friday.

Simmons' experience is mostly outdoors, including six games with the Washington Warthogs of the Continental Indoor Soccer League last summer.

The Spirit opens its National Professional Soccer League season against Harrisburg at 7:35 p.m. Saturday at the Baltimore Arena.
