Woman slain while standing at city bus stop

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A 39-year-old woman -- her 3-year-old niece in her arms -- was fatally shot yesterday at a bus stop in Northwest Baltimore, police said.

The woman's 13-year-old daughter witnessed the shooting, police said, but neither child was injured.

Cynthia Jones of the 1900 block of E. Fairmount Ave. was pronounced dead at Sinai Hospital about 4 p.m., police said.

Police said Ms. Jones, her daughter and niece were about to board an MTA bus about 3:15 p.m in the 5200 block of Park Heights Ave. when a fight broke out between youths on the bus. Ms. Jones and the children backed away. Seconds later, someone on the bus fired a weapon, said a police spokesman. The bullet missed its intended target, pierced a window and struck Ms. Jones in the neck, he said.
