Two men who allegedly stole four microwave ovens from a Wal-Mart were captured after a seven-mile, high-speed chase yesterday afternoon.
The men evaded an employee of the discount store in Westminster by driving around him on the rear parking lot before heading north on Route 27 on the wrong side, authorities said.
The suspects' vehicle sideswiped a car headed south on Route 27 near Random House, but the driver of that car was not injured, said Westminster City Police Officer Charles Shifflett.
The officer, notified of the theft by store personnel, saw the fleeing car as it started north on Route 27 and pursued it.
Officer Shifflett alerted other police agencies by radio of the theft, accident and pursuit, and state police and members of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office joined the chase.
Officer Shifflett saw the vehicle turn east on Route 482, but lost sight of the car, which was traveling at more than 70 mph, police said.
State police began searching roads in the area, and forced the vehicle to a stop on Gorsuch Road near Coon Club Road.
The men were captured without incident, officers said.
Police searched the suspects' vehicle and confiscated microwave ovens as evidence.
Charges are pending, and names of the suspects were not available last night.
