2 county schools honored for gains in achievement

A statewide education group recognized two Howard County middle schools last week for progress they have made toward meeting the Maryland School Performance Program standards.

Ellicott Mills and Patuxent Valley middle schools were among 39 Maryland elementary, middle and high schools honored Saturday a conference sponsored by the Maryland Education Coalition, a nonprofit group dedicated to improving public education.

The coalition recognized schools showing the largest gains under a school achievement formula devised by the Maryland Department of Education.

Patuxent Valley also received additional honors for its attempts to involve the entire school community in students' education.

The school was recognized for "achievement programs that extend beyond the school day and school staff," including "monthly communication with parents stressing suggestions for developing writing skills at home," said Joan Roache, coordinator of the conference at which the awards were presented.
