Union Bridge water is cleared up

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Rusty water that began coming out of Union Bridge customers' faucets early last week has been cleared up.

The rust was not harmful to health, said Councilman Selby Black, who supervises the town's water system.

But its presence produced many complaint calls, he said.

"Yes, my goodness, yes," he said. "My wife and I took turns answering it. The phone about rang off the hook."

Mr. Black said a check valve failed last weekend, which meant the system had to be back-flushed, a process that stripped rust from the inside of the pipes and carried it into customers' homes.

He said the rust clogged home water filtration systems.

The councilman said a new check valve was installed Wednesday and tested Thursday.
