Gadget gives plastic bags airtight seals

My Gadget of the Week is the Jiff-V-Sealer, which seals bread wrappers, frozen food bags and other packages airtight -- something you can't count on twist-'ems to do. Push the end of the wrapper through the slot of the gadget and slide it out with a professional-looking seal on the end.

(The company makes a big deal of the fact that you can pull the ends of the seal apart and reseal them, but I found that was more trouble than it was worth.)

The Jiff-V-Sealer, with 200 seals, costs around $13. Call (800) 669-1718 to order.

A seat for Barbie

Like other yuppies, Barbie is more into the comforts of home these days. But America's favorite fashion doll needs a high-style chair -- none of this plastic stuff for her -- so Metropolis magazine and Germany's Vitra Design Museum are sponsoring a Design-a-Chair contest for her, with a trip for two to Germany as the grand prize.

For information, call (212) 722-5050. But hurry, the deadline is Oct. 15.

Floral drama

Diane Pappas of Mille de Fleurs Inc., describes her floral arrangements as "simple, dramatic in the Asian style. I like to use high quality materials and focus on a particular bloom."

Kathy Quinn, her partner in the new Roland Park flower shop, enjoys creating large, romantic, intricate arrangements. They both like to do custom designs, using containers their clients bring in or going to their homes.

But if all you need is a bouquet of fresh cut flowers, Mille de Fleurs has that, too.

Mille de Fleurs, 314 Wyndhurst Ave., is open Monday by appointment only, Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
