Choir to bring the gospel to Westminster Voices of Heaven group to aid church fund raising

"The church with the heart in the heart of Westminster," Union Street United Methodist Church, is presenting a distinctive concert next weekend.

At 7 p.m. Saturday at Westminster High School, the Voices of Heaven 600 Choir will present a gospel concert to raise money for the Westminster church.

"I like gospel music, and I know a lot of people are moved by gospel music," said Sharon Toliver, a church member.

The Voices of Heaven 600 Choir, organized in the spring of 1994, is a music ministry of the Heaven 600-AM radio station in Baltimore.

"It was a vision of the radio station to start a community choir," said William A. Lynch Sr., choir director. "We represent all denominations -- Catholic, Methodist, Baptist, Episcopal -- and the great part is that we all come together to thank the Father and glorify God."

The choir, promoted by the radio station, consists of 74 vocalists of various ages chosen from statewide auditions. Most of the members are from the Baltimore area and rehearse weekly, Mr. Lynch said. The choir is supported by donations and ticket sales.

The choir performs songs of inspiration, worship and praise, from traditional to contemporary. Though just more than a year old, the choir has been heard at many events and churches around Baltimore. It has sung in every county in the state except Carroll.

"I thought it would be spiritually uplifting to the community to bring them here," Ms. Toliver said. "It's a way of ministering to the community."

Tickets -- $10 in advance or $15 at the door for adults and $6 for children 5 to 12 -- are available through the church, 876-4484, or at Bibles Plus Store, 876-5425.
