Jazz at Tilghman
Jazz and travel fans can have the best of both worlds if they take a day trip to Tilghman Island on Saturday for the island's first Jazz Festival. The lineup includes renowned jazz vibraphonist Milt Jackson, guitarist Charlie Byrd, trumpeter Wallace Roney, drummer Brooks Tegler and Hot Jazz, the jazz quintet Unified Jazz Ensemble and the Len Gray Orchestra.
The festival will be held at Tilghman Back Creek Park, overlooking the water, from noon to 6 p.m. Gates open at 11 a.m. for fans to spread out their blankets, check out the arts and crafts and food (plenty of fresh seafood, libations and other fare), or enjoy the scenery and abundant shore wildlife. The festival is sponsored by the Tilghman Island Environmental and Historic Trust, and proceeds will be used to restore nature trails at the wildlife sanctuary and help finance a recreational area for children.
Tickets cost $15 in advance or $20 at the gate. To reach Tilghman, take U.S. 50 to Easton, then Route 322 (Easton Parkway) to Route 33 through St. Michaels to Tilghman. Call (410) 822-4606.
A National Historic Landmark village tucked away in the jTC foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains is the setting for the 52nd annual Waterford Homes Tour and Craft Exhibit Oct. 6-Oct. 8 in Waterford, Va.
It is the oldest juried craft show in Virginia, attracting thousands of visitors each fall for three days of music, dance, crafts, children's activities, art exhibits, military re-enactments and food. number of the 18th- and 19th-century homes in the village will be open for tours, along with an old mill and a one-room schoolhouse. Revolutionary and Civil War re-enactors will engage in drills and skirmishes, while string bands, troubadours and barbershop, gospel and folk groups provide entertainment.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Tickets cost $12; $10 for seniors; free for children 12 and under. To reach Waterford, take Route 7 west past Leesburg, Va., turn right on Route 9 for one-quarter mile, turn right on Route 662 (Clarks Gap Road) and drive three miles to the village.
