Opening arguments will begin today in the Circuit Court trial of an Ellicott City man charged with raping a 14-year-old girl who Howard County police say is borderline mentally retarded.
The girl told police that a man walked her to a shed behind an abandoned house in the 3600 block of Fels Lane in Ellicott City and had sex with her the evening of March 4. The shed is near the Roger Carter Neighborhood Center in Ellicott City.
Jury selection and the trial were delayed for several hours yesterday because a key witness -- a police detective -- was unable to appear in court, said defense attorney Jonathan S. Smith.
Judge Raymond J. Kane Jr. estimated that the trial would last three days.
Sheldon L. Myers, 35, of the 3600 block of Mount Ida Drive is being tried on one count of second-degree rape and seven other counts related to a March attack. If convicted, he could get 10 to 20 years in prison, said Senior Assistant State's Attorney Kathi Hill.
Armed man robs cash from Ellicott City Wendy's
An armed robber forced an employee of an Ellicott City Wendy's to unlock an inside safe yesterday morning, then fled after he grabbed cash, Howard County police said.
The employee was not injured in the 7:15 a.m. robbery in the 9200 block of U.S. 40, police said.
The robber was described as a 5-foot-10 black male in his 30s with a mustache. He wore a black baseball cap and a dark, plaid flannel shirt. The driver of the getaway car appeared to be a heavyset woman, police said.
