Measure would provide law enforcement at lake

KITZMILLER -- Maryland and West Virginia officers would be able to enforce natural resources boating laws and other regulations on the 952-acre Jennings Randolph Lake under a measure approved by the U.S. Senate.

The 7-mile-long lake was created in 1982 with the construction of a dam across the Potomac River's north branch. Its creation, however, eliminated the natural river boundary between West Virginia and Maryland. Officials have been unable to re-establish the boundary, and enforcement of boating and other laws has been tentative or nonexistent.

The Senate measure provides Maryland and West Virginia with concurrent jurisdiction over the lake area.
