No. 6 City suffers 21-6 defeat to Prince George's Crossland No. 5 Oakland Mills upset by Thomas Johnson


Dennis Sowell scored two touchdowns, leading Crossland of Prince George's County to a 21-6 victory over visiting and No. 6 City yesterday.

The Knights (1-2) opened the scoring as Michael Johnson threw a 20-yard scoring pass to Kevin Griffin.

Crossland (3-0), ranked No. 5 in the Washington area, tied the game as Julian Peterson recovered a blocked punt in the end zone.

Sowell's 16-yard scoring run in the third quarter gave Crossland its first lead at 12-6.

* Thomas Johnson 25, Oakland Mills 22: Thomas Johnson (2-1) turned three of Oakland Mills' five turnovers into scores as the Patriots upset the No. 5 Scorpions (1-2).

* Perry Hall 28, Kenwood 19: Kevin Znamirowski completed 8 of 20 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns as host No. 11 Perry Hall (2-1) defeated Kenwood (0-3).

Kenwood's Steve Kelley rushed for 200 yards and three touchdowns.

* Severn 15, St. Mary's 14: With 3:18 left sophomore Dennard Melton raced 78 yards to a touchdown and quarterback Willis Wu hit Pete Janney in the back of the end zone for the two-point conversion as the No. 14 Admirals (3-0) held off the Saints.

* Liberty 49, Mount Hebron 6: Bill Shaffer rushed for three touchdowns and 326 yards to spark No. 15 Liberty (3-0) over Mount Hebron (2-1).
