Towson tops St. Francis, is 7-0 in soccer


Josh Smith (Howard) scored three goals in the first 12 minutes as Towson State continued its best start since 1966 with a 4-0 victory over visiting St. Francis (Pa.) in a men's soccer game yesterday.

Erik Washington scored a goal for Towson State (7-0) and Mike Stillman had five saves for his fourth shutout of the season.

Johns Hopkins 4, Ursinus 1: Matt Coleman had a goal and an assist, leading host Johns Hopkins (6-2, 2-1) past Ursinus (3-4, 1-1) in a Centennial Conference game. Peter Quin, Eric West and Bill Graf each scored for Johns Hopkins.

Washington Col. 1, Franklin & Marshall 0: Andrew King's unassisted goal with 5:22 remaining in regulation lifted visiting Washington College past Franklin & Marshall.

St. Mary's 8, Gallaudet 0: Pete Sweigard scored two goals and Ryan Voegtlin added a goal and an assist, leading St. Mary's past visiting Gallaudet.

Women's soccer

Loyola 2, Canisius 0: Tricia Witte (Oakland Mills) and Denise Serafin scored, as Loyola (6-3-1, 3-1) defeated visiting Canisius (4-2-1, 2-1) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game. Mary Clark had five saves, as the Greyhounds recorded their fourth straight shutout.

Goucher 3, King's College 0: Sarah Weaver (Towson) had a goal and an assist, leading visiting Goucher College (5-3) over King's College in the first round of the Wells Tournament. Goucher will play for the championship today at noon.

W. Maryland 6, Franklin & Marshall 3: Judy Remnitz scored two goals, leading host Western Maryland past Franklin & Marshall. Natalie Hannibal, Erin Murphy, Stephanie Van Deusen and Jessica Mongrain scored for Western Maryland.

Field hockey

Maryland 2, Old Dominion 1: Sarah Rosenwinkel scored both goals as host and third-ranked Maryland (7-0) defeated No. 4 Old Dominion. Kasey Heiser had an assist for Maryland.

Dickinson 2, Washington College 1: Brooke Doherty's goal with 11:37 remaining lifted visiting Dickinson (3-4, 2-0) over Washington College (1-4, 0-2) in a Centennial Conference game. Jill Schultz scored Washington's goal.

Goucher 2, Franklin & Marshall 0: Michele Mohlman and Joy Poneros each scored to boost visiting Goucher College (6-1-1).
