Maleeva, Makarova advance to final
Top-seeded Magdalena Maleeva rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over little-known American Meredith McGrath to advance the final of the indoor Moscow Ladies Open in Russia. The Bulgarian, ranked eighth in the world, will defend her title in the WTA tour event against Russian Yelena Makarova. The seventh-seeded Makarova beat Italy's Adriana Serra-Zanetti, 6-1, 6-1.
Crowder suspended for at least 10 games
Forward Troy Crowder, who is in the Los Angeles Kings' training camp on a tryout, was suspended by the NHL for at least 10 games for abusing an official during Thursday night's exhibition game against the New York Rangers at the Forum.
Crowder, who was assessed a double-game misconduct, acknowledged having hit linesman Brad Lazarowich with his elbow "on the backswing" as he wound up to punch opponents but said his contact with Lazarowich was unintentional.
Crowder cannot play in any more exhibition games, pending review by the league. He will have to serve the rest of his suspension when he signs a contract, even if that contract is with another team.
D'Entremont leads Voss in Japan Cup
Dave D'Entremont was 7-1 in match play to take a 93-pin lead over Brian Voss after the third round of the PBA's Oronamin C Japan Cup at Tokyo Port Bowl.
