But the Orioles got back at Givens last night, pounding him for six runs in two innings before he was relieved by Mark Kiefer.

In the dugout: Orioles manager Phil Regan asked leadoff hitter Jarvis Brown to bunt after Mark Smith and Jeff Huson led off the second inning with singles. The Orioles led at the time, 3-0, and went on to score three more runs when Cal Ripken homered.

In the clubhouse: Tigers shortstop Alan Trammell said he knew Mike Mussina was trying to give him something to hit Thursday, even before being warned by catcher Chris Hoiles. "Hoiles didn't have to say anything," Trammell said. "I could see it by the way he had pitched to Lou [Whitaker]. It's a gentlemanly thing to do, and it's very much appreciated."
