2 men accused of $21,000 theft of cash, jewelry

Two 18-year-old Westminster men, charged with breaking into the house of a former schoolmate and stealing jewelry and cash worth more than $21,000, were in custody Tuesday on burglary and theft counts.

State police said Michael V. McNeal Jr., of the 500 block of Sunshine Way, was being held on $100,000 bond, and Michael R. Trent, of the 700 block of Johahn Drive, was held on $75,000 bond.

According to court records, both men were charged with two counts each of burglary, theft and malicious destruction of property. Mr. McNeal also was charged with the theft of a 1986 Chevrolet Corvette from a Finksburg home Sept. 4.

Officers said in District Court documents they were called to a house in the 600 block of Sullivan Road about 1 p.m. Tuesday and found that someone had tried to kick in a basement door, leaving a footprint, before breaking a window to gain entry.

Police said they were told the owner was out of the house for 90 minutes and discovered the theft when she returned. She said two rings and a necklace were taken from a bedroom and $120 in cash was stolen from a counter in the kitchen.

Police said two men were arrested about 3 p.m. after authorities received a tip. Suspected drugs were found on the suspects.

The recovered drugs, believed to be heroin and cocaine, were sent to the state police laboratory for analysis, officers said.

Police recovered one of the rings, but the other jewelry is missing.
