Lions Club charity golf tourney starts Tuesday at Fort Meade


On Tuesday teams and individuals will begin a shotgun-start scramble at 1 p.m. at the Fort Meade Golf Course in the 14th annual Clarksville Lions Club Charity Golf Tournament.

Your donation of $80 entitles you to golf, a cart, beverages on the course, a welcome gift bag, snacks, dinner and prizes.

Church nursery

Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church in Glenwood celebrates 15 years as a congregation this year. The church began a nursery for children under age 3 last Sunday, so parents who wish may attend worship service without the distraction of very young children.

School family festival

If you're looking for a place to sell the crafts you enjoy making, sign up for a table at the Pointers Run Elementary School Fall Family Festival, which will be held Oct. 21.

Home Cell Group

St. Andrew's Episcopal Church worshiping at Union Chapel resumed Home Cell Group meetings last week. Groups of eight to 10 people meet regularly to talk about life, religion and service to the church and community.

Two daytime and two evening groups meet in our area. Pastor Harry Brunett leads a group called "Seekers" for people who have no church home and are searching for meaning in their lives.

Craft show

The annual craft show by the Ladies Auxiliary of the 5th District Volunteer Fire Department runs from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Oct. 28.

New Gethsemane pastor

The Rev. Tim King came to Glenwood this month to be pastor of what he calls the "exciting Gethsemane Baptist Church."

A native of Little Rock, Ark., Mr. King served as an associate pastor in his last post in Dallas.

Mr. King is joined by his wife, Annelle, and their newborn daughter, Katie. By month's end, Mr. King hopes to establish goals and plans for all the ministry leaders in the church.

Mass of Anointing

St. Louis Roman Catholic Church in Clarksville will have a Mass of Anointing at 3 p.m. Oct. 15. The sacrament of anointing is for Christians whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age.

The celebration of the sacrament consists of the laying on of hands by priests, the offering of the prayer of faith and anointing the sick with holy oil. The church offers the Sacrament of Anointing as a comfort and support for those who suffer in any way.

The Rev. Jeff Dauser, associate pastor of St. Louis, invites people to participate in this Mass.

Register tape collections

Ten public schools and several private schools in our area are caught in budget crunches. Each would like to have your grocery store cash register receipts to exchange for books, computers, band instruments, sports equipment and more.

Girl, Boy Scout programs

Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts have programs for youngsters beginning around first grade and continuing until adulthood.

At Bushy Park Elementary School, a new Daisy Troop and a new Brownie Troop are beginning this year. Kindergarten and first-grade girls are welcome to join. Call Connie Winterling at 442-2928.

Cub Scout packs will have meetings at all the local elementary schools tonight. Boys in grades one through five and their parents may attend to hear about the program.

Volunteer orientation

Clarksville Elementary School invites school volunteers to an orientation tea at 10 a.m. Sept. 29 in the cafeteria. Assistant Principal Bill Jenkins will talk about school policy and volunteering. Call 313-7050.

Glenelg High homecoming

Glenelg High School's Homecoming is Sept. 30. Festivities begin with a parade led by the award-winning Glenelg High School Marching Unit.

Floats prepared by individual classes and organizations will follow the band, drill team and silks from the school through the adjacent neighborhood and back to the school. The football game against Hammond High School at Glenelg kicks off at 1:30 p.m.

Country breakfast

For a buffet-style country breakfast Sunday, join the folks at the 5th District Volunteer Fire Department, east of the intersection of Routes 32 and 108 in Clarksville.

The Ladies Auxiliary will serve scrambled eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, home fries, applesauce, juice and coffee for $5 for adults, $2.50 for children, and free for children under 4. Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. until noon.
