Woman attacked during carjacking

A 23-year-old Ellicott City woman was grabbed by the neck and forced out of her vehicle during a carjacking outside her Ellicott City apartment Sunday night, Howard County police said.

Vicki Morris, 23, of the 3000 block of Oak Green Circle was not seriously injured, police said.

The incident marks the eighth carjacking or attempted carjacking in the county this year. The last was in July, when a man struggled with a Howard County police officer at a gas station and stole the officer's sports car. The car was later recovered and a man was charged.

About 8:10 p.m. Sunday, police said, Ms. Morris had left her home in the Great Oak Apartments and was getting into her 1994 Red Hyundai when a man surprised her and pushed her away from the car.

Police said the man sat in the driver's seat, unlocked the passenger's-side door for a second man and the two drove off in the vehicle. The car had Maryland license tags XYZ 464.

20 arrests made at sobriety checkpoint

Howard County police made 20 arrests -- including arrests for drug possession and auto theft -- during a weekend sobriety checkpoint at U.S. 40 and Oaks Road in Ellicott City, police said.

Police said 696 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, which began Friday and ended Sunday. Fourteen people were arrested for driving while intoxicated or while under the influence of alcohol, and two were charged with possession of marijuana, police said. Four other people were charged with bringing a stolen car across the county line from Baltimore County.

The checkpoint, which included assistance from members of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, was set up to reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents in Howard County, police said.
