More news, color weather map MARYLAND

The Maryland section, the most complete source of news about the city, the region and the state, will be bigger and better, with an additional full page of news every weekday. Here's what to expect:

New index

Every day, the front of the Maryland section will feature a reader-friendly index of stories inside the section, including a box outlining how you can get more news from our Sundial telephone information service.

Daily columns

Look to Page 2 every day for insightful columns on subjects that matter most to Marylanders - everything from what's going on in your child's classroom to how the Chesapeake Bay is faring.

Here's the lineup:

* There's nothing readers care more about than their children's education. Now, we'll offer a double dose of news from the classroom as Mike Bowler's column, The Education Beat, expands to Sundays and Wednesdays.

* Everyone hates fighting traffic, but the Intrepid Commuter makes it easier on Monday mornings by pointing out the trouble spots and perhaps even investigating the problem with the intersection that's driving you crazy.

* Take a look at maneuvers and machinations in The Political Game every Tuesday with Sun political writer William F. Zorzi Jr.

* Edward Gunts, The Sun's architecture writer, keeps track of what's being built, preserved and torn down every Thursday in Urban Landscape.

* There is only one Chesapeake Bay. And there is only one Tom Horton, the authentic voice of the bay region. Read his On the Bay column every Friday.

* Religion Notes, a digest of news from houses of worship, appears every Friday.

Lottery results

Lottery numbers from Maryland and other states, formerly found on the back page, will move to Page 2.

City/County page

Every day, the Maryland section will feature an additional full page of news from Baltimore City and Baltimore County, with more breaking stories and neighborhood news, an improved police blotter and a new digest of shorter articles. Readers in Anne Arundel, Howard and Carroll counties will continue to receive a daily package of news from their communities in their customized local sections.

What has changed:

* Jacques Kelly's column, a longtime favorite of Evening Sun readers, now appears every week in the Sunday Sun Magazine. During the week, look for his byline in the Maryland section on stories about the unique charms of Baltimore.

* Around the Inner Harbor, which highlights events in and around the city's premier tourist attraction, moves from the Maryland section to the new Live tabloid on Thursdays. Look for it on the full-color center spread featuring the week's best bets for

* Wiley Hall's column has been discontinued.

New classified

A redesigned Classified section will make it easier for readers to hunt for bargains and put items up for sale.Every day, across the top of the Classifieds, you'll find a guide that explains how to place an advertisement, how much it costs, how to pay for it, and the deadlines sellers need to meet.

The guide also tells readers where to find the Classifieds they're interested in - everything from employment and autos to real estate and legal notices. We're also using bolder labels for each department so readers can quickly locate what they want.

Weather page

Every day on the back page, rain or shine, you'll find a new full-color weather map in which the information you need to face the day appears in an improved, easier-to-use format.

Maryland columnists

* Michael Olesker: Nobody knows the heart and soul of the Baltimore area better than Olesker, whose commentary appears every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.

* Dan Rodricks: Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in This Just In, Rodricks brings you his entertaining and perceptive brand of only-in-Baltimore stories - the amusing, the sad, the serious, the poignant, the hip.

* Greg Kane: He has outraged, delighted and befuddled readers with his pieces on The Sun's Opinion Commentary page. Now Kane makes his debut as a columnist. He will write Wednesdays and Saturdays.
