LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Liberty University capitalized on turnovers and big plays to rout Morgan State, 48-19, last night.
Morgan State, which trailed by four touchdowns at halftime, fell to 0-3, all three losses coming on the road.
Liberty (2-1) put on an offensive clinic before the 3,252 fans who showed up on the rainy, windy night.
"Playing these three straight road games affects one's team," Morgan coach Ricky Diggs said. "It's taken its toll on us. It's been a brutal three weeks. . . . We've been pretty beat up over the last three games."
Liberty tailback Lawrence Worthington rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns as the Flames jumped to a 35-0 first-half lead. Quarterback Antwan Chiles hit 12 of 15 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns.
Morgan's offense was able to move the ball against Liberty, but costly penalties and two first-half turnovers helped keep the Bears out of the end zone.
Liberty grabbed a 7-0 lead with 2:19 left in the first quarter when Chiles connected with J. T. Morris for a 25-yard touchdown on a screen pass.
Morgan responded with three consecutive incompletions, giving the ball back to the Flames.
Three plays later, Liberty faced a first-and-22 on the Morgan 40. The Bears gambled and placed eight men on the line of scrimmage in blitz formation. Worthington then burned the blitz with a dive up the middle as the junior sprinted 40 yards untouched for the score.
Liberty extended the lead to 21-0 on its next possession when Chiles hit Courtney Freeman on a post pattern for a 45-yard scoring play.
Morgan State, still in the game at the time, began a drive that started on its 9-yard line. Tailback Na'im Greene and quarterback Michael Moore sparked a 12-play drive that saw the Bears advance to the Liberty 37.
But the drive ended when running back Andre Thomas fumbled at the 33 and Liberty's Brew McGoldrick recovered.
From there, Liberty went on a 14-play drive that ended when Morris dived in for the score from 1 yard out. At that point, $H Morgan State trailed 28-0, and the rout was on.
