HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HENRY!

THE BALTIMORE SUN

It is argued by his admirers that H.L. Mencken changed the language of America and thereby the nation's culture. It can also be argued that little else has changed . . . The top news story out of Washington on the day he was born, according to The Sun of Sept. 13, 1880, was: "Abuse of the Franking Privilege - Campaign Documents in the Mails."

This cartoon, titled "The Subconscious Mencken," bearing no resemblance to Mencken's face, was first published in the Nov. 3, 1913 Sun. It was used numerous times to accompany his column, "The Free Lance."
