25 Years Ago (week of Sept. 6-12, 1970)

* It was announced that Columbia's population was approaching the 10,000 mark. The new city's population had quadrupled during the previous 12 months.

* Construction began this week on Columbia's ice skating rink, with a ground-breaking ceremony and reception at the Oakland Mills site. It was estimated that the total cost of the facility would be $533,500.

50 Years Ago (Week of Sept. 9-15, 1945):

* In an address to the grand jury for the September term of the Howard County Circuit Court, Judge James Clark declared that there were "too many drunken men on the streets of Ellicott City," as well as too many women who were "not very particular about their morals."
