Betty Irvine finds satisfaction in hospital role

The Volunteer: Just about as soon as Betty Irvine and her husband, Walter, arrived in Edgewater nine years ago, she began volunteer work with the Anne Arundel Medical Center Auxiliary.

Mrs. Irvine, chairwoman of the Volunteer Placement Committee, and others have been busy recently recruiting volunteers for the tTC hospital's new Rebecca M. Clatanoff Women's Pavilion.

Mary Lou Baker of the hospital public relations department called Mrs. Irvine's success rate "very good."

Mrs. Irvine, a native of Bristol, Tenn., said she and her husband are longtime members of the New Annapolitans and that she encourages people new to the area to get involved with the hospital "whenever the opportunity presents itself."

Volunteer's comments: "I was asked to be the chairman of volunteer placement for a year and took that office last September. I happen to hit it at a really hot time . . . having to recruit volunteers [for] the Rebecca M. Clatanoff Pavilion.

"We've been absolutely thrilled at the public's response. I think the publicity about the new Clatanoff Pavilion excited a lot of people, and there were a lot of people who wanted to be a part it.

"Of course, I'm just one of a number of volunteer placement people, and we had a wonderful staff person, Maureen Shipley, working with us.

"Another thing we did was to have a volunteer fair for anyone interested in volunteering at either the downtown facility or the new Clatanoff Pavilion.

"My mother was always a great advocate of hospital work, so I think part of it is in the genes. She was always very active.

"As long as I live in the Annapolis area, I would always want to be involved with the hospital in some way. I find it very satisfying and very rewarding. Our motto is, 'Pass the kindness on,' and that's what we try to do."
