Three members of the U.S. Walker Cup team, which wraps up its two-day competition in Wales today, will have individual honors at stake next weekend when they are part of the 260-player qualifying field in the 15th U.S. Mid-Amateur championship at Caves Valley Golf Club and Woodholme Country Club.
Tim Jackson, the defending champion from Germantown, Tenn.; Buddy Marucci, a Caves Valley member from Berwyn, Pa., and a recent U.S. Amateur finalist; and Jerry Courville, a recent U.S. Amateur medalist from Stamford, Conn., will be among those RTC seeking places in the 64-man match-play draw when 36-hole on-site qualifying is held next Saturday and Sunday.
The remaining schedule calls for a single round Sept. 18; double rounds Sept. 19-20; and an 18-hole championship round Sept. 21. All match-play rounds will be at Caves Valley, and the entire schedule will be open to the public at no charge. Parking at Woodholme will be at the club, and at Caves Valley, on the opposite side of Park Heights Avenue, with a shuttle service to the club.
Jackson, 36, will be appearing in his fourth Mid-Am. He made the 64-man cut each of the past three years, and at Hazeltine Country Club in Chaska, Minn., last year, he defeated Tommy Brennan of Mandeville, La., 1-up in the final. Earlier that summer, he reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur.
He cites the Mid-Am championship as his most memorable golf experience for, "Winning it, and realizing what it means to be a national champion."
This year, he played in the Masters, tied for second in the Porter Cup and at the Azalea tournament, then lost to Marucci in the U.S. Amateur quarterfinals two weeks ago at Newport (R.I.) Country Club.
That was where Marucci, 43, a University of Maryland graduate, made his best showing in 16 U.S. Amateur appearances, winning three overtime matches en route to a championship meeting with defending champion Tiger Woods, where he lost on the 36th hole, 2-up.
Before the Amateur, Marucci had won the annual Hugh Wilson Memorial tournament at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., and in his past are four Pennsylvania Amateur titles and two Philadelphia Amateur titles.
Courville, 36, has had a memorable summer. He qualified for his first (in eight tries) U.S. Open, and came to the 36th hole needing a par to make the cut. He missed it, but considered it a terrific experience, especially in the Centennial event.
He shot 70-67137 to win the Amateur medal by a stroke, then lost to No. 64 in the draw, Bill Madden, of North Haven, Conn., 2-up.
Earlier, he and Joe Sommers, another Mid-Am qualifier, won the Chesapeake Cup at Caves Valley, and more recently the coordinator for Pitney Bowes won the Metropolitan (N.Y.) Amateur. He also was third -- low amateur -- in the Met Open, and won the New York City Amateur.
The monthly meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Golf Course Superintendents will be held Wednesday at Cripple Creek CC in Bethany Beach, Del. . . . A swing analyzer, golf-simulator competitions and a putting contest will be held at the Towson Town Center on Friday and Saturday (10 a.m.-9 p.m.) and Sunday (noon-5 p.m.) as part of a 20-city tour. . . . Middle Atlantic PGA representatives James Massey (Boonsboro) and Allison Fairley (Great Falls, Va.) shot 84-80164, and 87-84171, in their respective divisions at the PGA/Maxfli Junior championship in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. . . . Proceeds from the fourth U.S. Healthcare/Baltimore Reads celebrity golf tournament tomorrow at Chestnut Ridge CC will go to Baltimore Reads Inc. Fred Funk, Maryland's only representative on the PGA Tour, and winner of the recent Pleasant Valley tournament in Sutton, Mass., will be the featured guest.
