25 Years Ago (week of Aug. 30-Sept. 5, 1970)

* Howard County public schools opened their doors to 17,445 students this week -- a record number in what was the most rapidly growing school system in the state.

* Allview residents breathed a sigh of relief upon learning that a controversial section of Broken Land Parkway would be re-routed out of the Little Patuxent River flood plain. The residents, whose homes were built in the flood plain area, are already experiencing increased flooding problems as Columbia area construction increases.

50 Years Ago (Week of Sept. 2-8, 1945):

* A Virginia man was held in the Ellicott City jail on $1,000 bond, on a charge of making false statements in the procurement of a marriage license at the Ellicott City Court House.
