Ricardo Sanchez, 54, a Chicano poet who grew up in a barrio and wrote of the harsh realities of life on the border, died of cancer on Sunday in his native El Paso, Texas. He said his schoolteachers had told him Mexicans didn't write poetry -- and he devoted much of his life to proving them wrong. He served time in prison for robbery, and in 1971, a year after he was released, his poetry collection "Canto y Grito Mi Liberacion" helped define the Chicano movement
