Pedestrian, 17, assaulted on bike bath

Three juveniles on bikes stopped a pedestrian on a Columbia bike path Friday night and assaulted and robbed him when he refused to buy marijuana, Howard County police said.

The victim, a 17-year-old Columbia youth, was not seriously injured in the robbery in the 10200 block of Little Patuxent Parkway in Town Center, police said.

About 9:45 p.m., he was walking on a stretch of a popular bike path behind the Rouse Building when juveniles on bikes approached him. When he refused to buy marijuana from them, police said, one of the juveniles grabbed him by the neck while others searched him.

It was not clear whether anything was taken, police said.

One of the teen-agers was described as a black male 5 feet 6 inches tall, with medium-length dreadlocks. He rode a 10-speed bike and wore jeans and a T-shirt, police said.

The victim gave similar descriptions of the other two suspects, police said.

2 Ellicott City men injured in car accident

Two Ellicott City men were injured -- one seriously -- when their cars collided at an intersection in Columbia's Hickory Ridge village at noontime Friday, Howard County police said.

Kevin M. Smith, 18, of the 9800 block of Fox Hill Court in Ellicott City was listed in critical but stable condition yesterday at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Christopher Burk, 19, of the 4200 block of Hermitage Drive in Ellicott City refused treatment at the scene for minor injuries.

Police said Mr. Smith -- driving a Chevrolet Cavalier station wagon -- tried to make a left turn onto eastbound Hickory Ridge Road at Cordage Walk and pulled into the path of a Mazda truck driven by Mr. Burk.
