St. John Methodist Church plans family picnic, worship


Don't forget the Old Fashioned Family Day at St. John Methodist Church, at 6019 Belle Grove Road in Pumphrey Sunday.

Come join in the fun, worship, games and music. Hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream, sodas and punch will be provided for an outdoor picnic, and each family is being asked to bring a picnic meal for themselves and two guests.

Fun and games for all ages begins outdoors at 3 p.m., while enriching spiritual videos will be shown indoors. The Outdoor Gospel Feast, with music by guest soloists and groups, begins at 5 p.m. For more information, call 636-2578.


Were you away this summer when the Brooklyn Park Youth Athletic Association held registration for fall soccer? If so, you have a second chance. Registrations for boys and girls, ages 5 through 15, will be accepted between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. today through Thursday at the Sugar Shack on the 10th Avenue ball fields. Fees are $30 for one child or $50 for two or more. Sign up now and have fun.


The Northern District Police Community Relations Council will VTC meet at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Northern District Police Station located at 939 Hammonds Lane.

The guest speaker will be Kathy Shatt from the Department of Zoning enforcement unit. Acting Capt. Dennis Wheeler will give a report on the activities at Northern District.

The Belle Grove Elementary School community would like to welcome five new staff members for the 1995-1996 school year. New teachers are Patricia Butler, second grade; Lori Cease, first grade; Damian O'Conner, reading; and April Valentine, fifth grade. Shirley Gibson is a new instructional assistant, and Cathy Wolfe joins the staff as a health assistant.

At Brooklyn Park Elementary School, a warm welcome is extended to new staff members Brenda Jordan, an office assistant; Donna Rush, who teaches sixth grade; Rachel Ogan, a kindergarten teacher; and Elizabeth Vermette, a kindergarten teacher assistant.


There will be an organizational meeting of the Citizens Advisory Committee at 7 p.m. Monday, in the North County High School office conference room. Any parent or community member interested in getting involved with the school-related issues should plan on attending.

The advisory committee serves as an advisory board to the school principal on local issues and to the superintendent and school board on countywide issues.


Now that cooler temperatures are approaching, there is no better time to start an exercise program.

The Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks is sponsoring a step-training class beginning Sept. 18 at Belle Grove Elementary School, 4502 Belle Grove Road.

Step training is a cardiovascular program in which participants use a low step bench to exercise. This class is designed specifically for participants looking for a non-dance format. Steps are provided.

Classes meet from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays for 7 weeks. Registration fee is $42.50.

St. John Lutheran Church, 226 Washburn Avenue, will return to its regular schedule of services Sunday. Worship services will take place at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. with Sunday school at 9:45 a.m.
