At least the Orioles face a team during Cal Ripken's expected record-breaking series that is struggling worse than they are. The Angels' 8-1 loss to Boston yesterday extended their losing streak to nine in a row, their longest of the season. They have lost 12 of their past 13 games and five straight series. California began by losing three straight to the Orioles out in Anaheim and is 0-6 on its current road trip. The Angels' last win came against the Orioles on Aug. 24. The Angels have not even had a lead in 70 innings. The difference is the Angels (67-53) are still in first place in the AL West, holding a 5 1/2 -game lead over Seattle. Tim Salmon (.330, 31 HRs, 88 RBIs) and Jim Edmonds (.294, 30, 97) provide the power for the Angels. Manager Marcel Lachemann and third baseman Tony Phillips were both ejected in yesterday's loss.
