Payton gets CFL weekly honor

Baltimore Stallions rush end Elfrid Payton, who tied a single-game Canadian Football League record with five sacks in last week's 41-14 victory over the Toronto Argonauts, has been named the CFL's Lineman of the Week.

It marked the second time this year that Payton -- who is tied for the league lead with 16 sacks -- has won the award.

Baltimore offensive lineman Mike Withycombe, who replaced injured Shar Pourdanesh (sprained ankles) at left tackle against Toronto, was the runner-up for Lineman of the Week. Withycombe has played four positions on Baltimore's line this season.

The Stallions also signed defensive back Melvin Crawford yesterday. Crawford, recently cut by the Miami Dolphins, spent one day in Baltimore's training camp in June.

Crawford, a native of Germantown who attended Churchill High in Potomac, was a three-year starter at Hampton, where he became the school's all-time interceptions leader. Last year, he had seven interceptions and recorded a school-record 26 pass knockdowns.
