National League -- Announced that Montreal Expos P Carlos Perez has been suspended for four games, effective immediately, for bumping umpire Bill Hohn during a game

against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 22.


Orioles -- Purchased the contract of P James Hurst from Triple-A Rochester, and later released him. Placed P Arthur Rhodes on the 15-day DL.

Atlanta Braves -- Acquired former Orioles OF Mike Devereaux from the Chicago White Sox for OF Andre King. Sent 3B Jose Oliva to the St. Louis Cardinals for OF Anton French and assigned French to Single-A Durham.

Chicago White Sox -- Assigned OF Andre King to Single-A Prince William.

Cincinnati Reds -- Placed P John Smiley on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Aug. 22.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Purchased the contract of P Jim Bruske from Triple-A Albuquerque. Designated P Rudy Seanez for assignment.

Montreal Expos -- Recalled P Kirk Rueter from Triple-A Ottawa.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Assigned P Juan Guzman to Triple-A Syracuse for medical rehabilitation. Assigned P Dennis Gray outright to Double-A Knoxville.



L Vancouver Grizzlies -- Named Lionel Hollins assistant coach.


NFL -- Suspended Arizona Cardinals WR Chuck Levy for one year for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Green Bay Packers -- Waived CB Steve Israel. Agreed to terms with LB Joe Kelly.

Minnesota Vikings -- Agreed to terms with RB Robert Smith on a one-year contract. Placed G Bernard Dafney on IR. Removed the exempt status from DE Derrick Alexander.

Pittsburgh Steelers -- Signed QB Mike Tomczak to a new contract.
