Man robs Ellicott City bank after showing teller fake bomb

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A robber pretending to be a bank customer waited in a line at Provident Bank in Ellicott City, showed a teller a fake bomb and fled when the worker gave him cash Friday, Howard County police said.

Police said everyone was evacuated from the bank in the 9300 block of U.S. 40 immediately after the 6:30 p.m. robbery.

A bomb squad from the state fire marshal's office went to the scene and found that the device was nothing more than tubes of caulk wrapped in tape, police said.

The robber was described as a white male, 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet tall, weighing 150 to 180 pounds. He wore glasses, a jacket, jeans and a white motorcycle helmet with a visor, police said.

Anyone with information should call Howard County police at 313-2220, police said.
