A 27-year-old Hillendale man has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of his wife Saturday on the eve of her 31st birthday.
Anthony Lee Davenport of the 6600 block of Ellsmere Place was arrested and held without bail at the Towson Precinct after questioning. He is scheduled in court today for a bail review hearing.
His wife, Katanya Denise Davenport, 30, was pronounced dead of stab wounds about 5:50 p.m. Saturday, Baltimore County police said.
Police said Mrs. Davenport's oldest child, Tamara Sophia Rose Fisher, 10, was among several people who called 911 about a domestic dispute involving the couple. When officers arrived, they found Mrs. Davenport dead on a bedroom floor in the couple's two-bedroom apartment in the Hillendale Gate Apartments.
Mr. Davenport, who also had called 911, was at the scene. He was taken into custody, questioned and charged.
Police said they recovered a large knife believed to be the murder weapon.
Three youngsters were in the apartment during the attack: Tamara, the couple's newborn baby and a cousin, said E. Jay Miller, a county police spokesman.
Mr. Miller said the children did not see the stabbing.
Tamara and her infant sibling were turned over to Department of Social Services officials, Mr. Miller said. Their cousin was returned to her family.
Mr. Miller said Mrs. Davenport had left the apartment earlier Saturday to go to a family gathering. When she returned home, she and her husband began arguing almost immediately, he said.
"How could this happen?" asked Sylvia Maxwell, who lives on the same floor as the Davenports.
Mrs. Maxwell said the Davenports were arguing off and on Saturday. "She left [at 4 p.m.] with the children and came back.
"That's the hurting part. Why didn't she stay away?" Mrs. Maxwell said.
Mrs. Maxwell described Mrs. Davenport as a pleasant person who "spoke to me" in passing and Mr. Davenport as a reserved man who didn't socialize with neighbors.
"I didn't see him that much," she said, adding that the couple had lived there for about two years.
