The volunteers: How are Rachael Borkowski, 16, of Millersville (left) and Audrey Bellamy, 17, of Glen Burnie spending some of their summer vacation? Volunteering with Partners In Care, a program that assists elderly or disabled people with various needs.
Rachael, who will be a junior at Old Mill High School in the fall, has been a volunteer with Partners in Care since January, primarily doing grocery shopping for clients.
Joining the program as part of her school's service learning project, Rachael has continued her work during the summer for one elderly man in particular, taking his grocery list and doing his shopping about every two weeks. She also performs some light cleaning at his home.
Audrey, a volunteer with the program since it began more than TTC two years ago, assists an elderly woman with light housework, changing her bed and providing her with some companionship about every two weeks.
Audrey, a member of Old Mill High School's National Honor Society, will be a senior and also participates in the Elvaton Towne neighborhood security patrol.
Maureen Cavaiola, the volunteer coordinator for Partners In Care, remarks that "they're lovely young ladies. I wish we could clone them."
Rachael Borkowski: "I just like helping people out, and I know if I was alone I would want someone to be around to help me."
Audrey Bellamy: "I was one of the first volunteers. When Partners In Care was just starting up, I was referred to them and I've been taking care of one particular lady who is in her 90s.
"My goal is to become a nurse practitioner, and you need volunteer work to get into medical school.
"It's given me a lot more patience with the elderly and with people in general."
About the program: Partners in Care is sponsored in part by North Arundel Hospital.
As a result of a grant from United Way of Central Maryland, a Partners In Care satellite office opened last week at the Brooklyn Park Health Center, 300 Hammonds Lane.
