Scales, McCollskey win title

CENTREVILLE, Va. -- The team of Ron Scales and Glenn McCollskey fashioned nine birdies in 14 holes, including five in a row during one stretch, and won the Middle Atlantic/PGA-Top Flite Pro-Assistant championship at Chantilly National Golf and Country Club yesterday.

The University of Maryland team shot 31-32-63, finishing two strokes clear of their closest pursuers in the 79-team field. Second place was shared by Barry Fuhrman-Wayne DeFrancesco of Woodholme CC (31-34-65) and Bob Dolan-Jack Skilling of Columbia CC (34-31-65).

The winners had three birdie putts in the 20- to 30-foot range.

The best previous effort by Scales, 54, was as an assistant in 1971. Then, he and head professional Frank Cronin lost a playoff to Ward Burgess-Bob Murphy of Chevy Chase CC when Murphy chipped in at the second extra hole.
