Regional lifeguard competition set


The Columbia Association will sponsor the Northeast Regional Lifeguard Competition at 9 a.m. July 31 at the Kendall Ridge Pool, 8245 Tamar Drive, Columbia.

The event will feature competition between teams from pools and water parks throughout the region, and is open to the public.

Events will test lifeguard skills and knowledge. They will include a deep water victim rescue, a two-lifeguard rescue, cardiopulmonary resuscitation testing and spinal injury management.

* Long Reach: 9000 block of Billow Row: Jewelry was stolen after someone entered a home through a rear window Thursday, police said.

6000 block of Majors Lane: A home's front window was found pried and broken Wednesday, but police said there was no entry.

* Owen Brown: 6500 block of Seedling Lane: A resident who heard noises at home home Thursday night saw a would-be burglar run from the rear door area, police said.

* Kings Contrivance: 10000 block of Cotton Mill Lane: Someone entered a home through a basement window Thursday. Police were not sure whether anything was taken.
